An expanding family business, with nothing but pure laughter and smiles to get us through the 2ft of concrete we sometimes hit, just to dig one hole. As a couple, we do every job together with our fantastic labourers who are our friends.

FAQ's

In the UK, determining which fence belongs to you typically involves checking your property's title deeds or the Title Plan from the Land Registry.

These documents often show the "T-marks" that indicate fence ownership - the owner is on the side where the "T" stem touches the boundary line.
If your documents don't clearly show ownership, check if there's a fence agreement with your neighbor. As a general convention (though not a legal rule), many UK properties are responsible for boundaries on the left side when looking from the street.

When in doubt, have a friendly chat with your neighbors - they might have documentation that clarifies ownership. If uncertainty persists, consulting a property solicitor may be necessary to avoid future disputes.

The cost of a new fence in the UK varies considerably depending on several factors:

  • Fence type: Close board fencing typically ranges from £90-£120 per metre, while panel fencing costs approximately £70-£100 per metre. Premium options like composite fencing can be £150+ per metre.
  • Length and height: Longer and taller fences naturally require more materials and labour.
  • Access issues: Difficult-to-reach areas may increase labour costs.
  • Ground conditions: Rocky soil or slopes can make installation more complex and expensive.
  • Gate requirements: Adding gates will increase the overall cost.
  • Removal of old fencing: This typically costs an additional £10-£15 per metre.

For an accurate quote tailored to your specific requirements, we recommend contacting our team at Fencing Fellas for a free, no-obligation site assessment.

In the UK, fence height regulations are as follows:

  • Without planning permission: Fences adjacent to a road or footpath can be up to 1 metre (3.28 feet) high. Fences not adjacent to a road can be up to 2 metres (6.56 feet) high.
  • With planning permission: Higher fences require approval from your local planning authority.

Additional considerations:

  • Conservation areas and listed buildings may have stricter regulations.
  • Covenant restrictions on your property may limit fence height regardless of planning rules.
  • Party wall agreements might be needed if the fence is on a boundary with a neighbour.
  • Front garden fences typically have lower height restrictions than rear garden fences.

For peace of mind, we always recommend checking with your local council's planning department before proceeding with any fence installation above the standard permitted heights. At Fencing Fellas, we can help guide you through these regulations during our consultation process.

Yes, we can often salvage and reuse certain fence materials depending on their condition. Concrete posts that remain sturdy and undamaged can frequently be incorporated into your new fence, reducing both costs and waste. Sound timber rails and panels that aren't rotted or warped may also be reusable in some circumstances.

During our initial site assessment, our team will carefully evaluate your existing materials and provide honest recommendations about what can be safely reused. We prioritize quality and longevity in our work, so we'll only suggest reusing materials that won't compromise the structural integrity or appearance of your new fence.

If you're particularly interested in recycling materials for environmental or budget reasons, please mention this when booking your consultation and we'll explore all possible options.

The installation time for new fencing depends on several factors:

  • Project size: A typical garden boundary of 15-20 metres can usually be completed in 1-2 days.
  • Fence type: Complex styles like close board fencing take longer than pre-made panel installations.
  • Site conditions: Rocky soil, steep slopes, or limited access can extend the timeline.
  • Weather conditions: Heavy rain or extreme weather may cause brief delays.
  • Removal requirements: If old fencing needs extensive removal, this adds time to the project.

For most residential properties, we can complete standard fencing projects within 1-3 days. Larger properties or complex installations may require additional time. During your consultation, we'll provide a specific timeframe for your unique project and always aim to complete work efficiently without compromising quality.

You don't necessarily need to be present throughout the entire installation process. Many of our customers arrange for us to access their gardens while they're at work or away from home.

If you choose not to be present:

  • We'll need clear access to your garden and working areas
  • A brief meeting before work begins to confirm boundaries and specifications is recommended
  • Having a contact number to reach you for any questions is helpful

However, we understand that some homeowners prefer to be home during the installation, particularly when decisions about exact positioning or unforeseen issues might arise. We're happy to accommodate your preference either way.

Rest assured that all our team members are fully insured, background-checked, and committed to treating your property with respect. We'll always leave your garden clean and tidy whether you're home or not.

We offer a variety of access and security options to enhance your fence installation:

  • Gates: Available in matching styles to your chosen fence, including standard pedestrian gates, double gates for wider access, and driveway gates in various designs.
  • Security features: Options include anti-climb tops, lockable gate systems, and additional height (where permitted by local regulations).
  • Custom solutions: We can install concealed access panels, maintenance gates, and pet-friendly features like cat flaps or dog windows.
  • Decorative elements: Trellis toppers not only add aesthetic appeal but can increase security with height while maintaining an open feel.
  • Automation: For driveway gates, we can prepare for or install automated opening systems with keypads, remote controls, or smart connectivity.

During our consultation, we'll discuss your specific access requirements and security concerns to design a solution that balances practicality, aesthetics, and security for your property.

Yes, we provide complete removal and disposal of your old fencing as part of our standard service. Our comprehensive approach includes:

  • Careful dismantling of all existing fence components
  • Thorough removal of old concrete foundations where necessary
  • Environmentally responsible disposal of all materials, with recycling where possible
  • Clean-up of the work area once the new fence is installed

There's no need for you to arrange skip hire or waste disposal - we handle everything. This service is typically included in your quote unless specifically discussed otherwise.

If you wish to keep any part of the old fencing (perhaps for firewood or garden projects), simply let us know before work begins, and we'll set these materials aside for you.

For standard fence installations, we generally don't require access to your home's utilities. Our professional team comes fully equipped with:

  • Battery-powered tools
  • Water containers for any mixing needs
  • Portable equipment that allows us to work independently

However, there are some circumstances where access might be helpful:

  • Water access: During hot weather, access to a garden tap can be useful for mixing concrete and occasional tool cleaning.
  • Electrical needs: For specialized installations like lighting features or automated gates, we may need temporary access to power points.

If we do require any utility access, we'll discuss this during the consultation stage and make arrangements that cause minimal disruption. Our team is experienced in working self-sufficiently, so utility access is rarely a concern for standard fencing projects.

Beyond fencing, we offer a comprehensive range of landscaping services to transform your outdoor space:

  • Garden design: From simple layouts to complete garden transformations
  • Decking and patios: Custom-built wooden decks and various paving options including block paving, Indian sandstone, and porcelain tiles
  • Turfing and artificial grass: Fresh lawn installation or low-maintenance artificial alternatives
  • Planting schemes: Border creation, hedge planting, and ornamental feature areas
  • Garden structures: Pergolas, arbours, raised beds, and retaining walls
  • Driveway installation: Block paving, gravel, and resin-bound surfaces
  • Garden clearance: Overgrown area management and site preparation
  • Water features: Ponds, fountains, and rill installations

Our skilled team can handle projects of any size, from small garden enhancements to complete outdoor living transformations. We pride ourselves on creating beautiful, functional outdoor spaces that complement your property and lifestyle.

When selecting a fencing company, consider asking these important questions:

  • Are you fully insured? (We carry comprehensive public liability and professional indemnity insurance)
  • How long have you been in business? (Experience matters for quality installation)
  • Can I see examples of your previous work or speak to past customers? (We're happy to provide references)
  • What guarantees do you offer? (We provide workmanship warranties)
  • What materials do you use and what are their lifespans? (Quality materials ensure longevity)
  • How will you handle any boundary disputes? (Professional companies should have clear policies)
  • What's your process if unexpected issues arise during installation?
  • How will you protect existing plants and features during installation?
  • Do you adhere to relevant building regulations and planning requirements?
  • What payment schedule do you require? (Be wary of companies demanding full payment upfront)

At Fencing Fellas, we welcome these questions and any others you might have. Transparent communication is the foundation of our customer relationships.
